FAQ - Where do I start? EV charging rollout planning

Writer's picture: Chris CheethamChris Cheetham

Thanks for taking a dive into this FAQ series with us, there's always so much ground to cover with these so we'll try and keep the content flowing so long as the questions keep coming!

The first thing I'd say about this question is that it is the right one to ask! I've seen too many examples of projects getting far down the line before asking the bigger EV charging rollout planning questions. Here's a few starters for 10:

  • What do we want from this install?

  • Who is the primary user profile?

  • How long does this need to serve us for?

  • When do we need it operational by?

There's lots more questions to answer but they should at least get the gears turning.

This approach applies whether it's a new install being considered or expansion of an existing site. It might be logical to think that newer sites come with more questions but often it's expansion projects which can be tougher to get right as they come with more existing constraints. Either way, getting your objectives in place is vital. If you'd like some assistance in how to approach either scenario we'll be happy to help. We've got some useful information on new projects and existing installs on the linked webpages but please do reach out for more.

Once you've identified your ideal outcomes it's then all about viewing those through a practical lens. That's where the Estate Inventory comes into its own to give you the confidence of an accurate source of truth and starting point.

So now you've got your ideal objectives and your factual data, you can make some informed decisions on any tweaks needed to turn your ideal objectives into realistic deliverables. That may be something you're comfortable with achieving in-house but it can be useful to collaborate on this with someone with industry expertise. [Another shamless plug alert] Safer Charging can also assist here to get everything to a point where you're ready to invite installation quotes.
